The difference between hydraulic dock levelers and mechanical dock levelers is very clear – Hydraulic dock levelers operate automatically with a push of a button, while mechanical dock levelers are activated with a pull chain.
Hydraulic Dock Leveler
+ Simply started by pressing a switch.
+ The push-button switch controls the lifting of the dock leveler and the extension of the lip.
+ When the push-button is released, the dock leveler will slowly descend.
+ A hydraulic dock leveler tends to operate within a range between 12 inches below and 12 inches above the dock level.
+ Normal operation does not require pulling a chain.
+ When loading is finished, the operator presses a button to return the Dock leveler to its original position (this can also be programmed automatically).
+ Hydraulic docks are more efficient and easier for workers because they don’t require chain pulling or other manual actions that could lead to injury risks.
+ The hydraulic lift platform has one motor, two cylinders, and hoses.

Mechanical Dock Leveler
+ Requires manual activation.
+ It must be positioned on a support by first pulling a chain (at the rear of the dock leveler) which keeps the system suspended freely and allows the platform to raise and the lip to extend.
+ The operator must then step onto the platform and use their body weight to push the dock leveler down onto the support (of the truck, container, etc.).
+ To set the support beneath the dock, the operator pulls a second chain (located near the front of the dock leveler) for assistance.
+ The mechanical movements of a manual dock are less efficient than a hydraulic dock.
+ Mechanical docks have spring mechanisms and moving parts that are always under tension and require frequent replacement, especially the dock springs.
+ Additionally, mechanical springs are affected by temperature—expanding in summer heat and contracting in winter cold—requiring constant adjustments to fit.
Through the comparison above, we can clearly see the operating principles as well as the usefulness that automatic hydraulic dock levelers bring.
NALTAKO hopes customers will evaluate the efficiency of both product lines in detail to choose the most suitable product for themselves.
